Our voyage to the white shark cafe with @schmidtocean gave us the opportunity to study much more than the sharks themselves. Throughout this oceanographic cruise, we deployed the ROV, SuBastian, and a midwater trawl to sample this remote region of the North Pacific. This is Idiacanthus antrostomus, a dragon fish, the Pacific Blackdragon. I had the opportunity to shoot a number of midwater creatures that I will continually share here with y’all.
On a road trip this morning to #montereybayaquarium 🐟 We got blessed with tickets (free!) to the homeschool day today & decided to go on the adventure. I thought the kids would sleep, but they are instead taking potty breaks every 30 minutes lol #roadtrip#sunrise
They’re terrible pictures, but today I got to see the giant pacific octopuses on full glorious display at the @montereybayaquarium. They danced liked 8-armed angels and swirled like a 3-hearted flag over the sovereign undersea nation of Cephalopodia.
I damn near teared up before God & everyone & the Japanese tourists over whom I could easily witness the tentacular roiling & revelating.
It was a display worthy of Poseidon himself. Hats off, Monterey Bay. Thank you for giving 33-year-old me a magical day out with the cephalopals with whom 6-year-old me fell in love.
Well, that was quite a weekend! Thank you so much to everyone who stopped by! If you didn’t make it, don’t worry... I’ve got a First Friday show on 11/2 upstairs in the new lounge at the Catalyst. See you then! Now back to painting!!!
We are taking a break today to enjoy the amazing places around us. Elliana is visiting the aquarium for the first time- she is having a ball saying “oooooooh!” at everything she sees. I’m thankful for my small Uppababy Cruz stroller so I can maneuver through the crowds. It’s finally starting to feel a bit like fall, bring on the chunky sweaters and chowder! . .
Going to the Monterey Bay Aquarium is such a special thing for our family. Micah and I went there for my 18th birthday, just 2 Kids completely in love. Then Micah worked there while he was in college - and we always say “hi” to his little shop by the penguin exhibit. Then we lived there in 2011 and were frequent visitors with toddler Emma and baby Abby. And now we visited yesterday with our FOUR kids who loved every second of it. 😍 What a trip it’ll be when we visit with our grandkids someday... #itsaforeverthing#growingup#familyofsix#montereybayaquarium
Sunstar seen during a dive in British Columbia.
It's hard to believe these massive stars used to be so common in Monterey and are now absent.
Seeing them up in the Pacific Northwest is a treat but also a reminde that our oceans are changing and we're responsible for it.
